Cherán es un pueblo indígena ubicado al noreste de la meseta Purépecha, en el estado de Michoacán. Con menos de 13,000 habitantes y por iniciativa de las mujeres, se han levantado contra el crimen organizado y la tala clandestina, que desde el 2008 há devastado el bosque de 27,000 hectáreas a tan solo 7,000. Atrincherados desde el pasado 15 de abril, la gente de Cherán destierra al Gobierno y Policía local por corruptelas y apatía ante la problemática, sustituyendo a éstos por una Comisión General que "autogobierna" y una ronda comunitaria que "autoprotege". Los voluntarios de ambas Fuerzas Comunales tienen un periodo rotatorio. "Vecino con vecino, cuadra con cuadra".

Cherán is an indigenous village located northeast of the Purepecha plateau in the state of Michoacan. With less than 13,000 habitants, it started with the women's initiative, they have risen up against organized crime and illegal logging, which has devastated a 27,000 hectares forest to 7,000 since 2008.
